Exemplar Awards

Held annually since 2006, Local Government Improvement & Development and Intelligent Addressing have organised an Exemplar Awards programme. The awards recognise the innovation, effort, commitment and achievement of local authorities, police and fire in the creation, maintenance and utilisation of the NLPG and NSG.

With the introduction of the Mapping Services Agreement (MSA) in 2005, one of the largest, if not the largest, single shared service in local government was formed. Local government set in place a contractual framework to maintain and share the gazetteers with councils, police forces, fire, national parks, conservation boards, passenger transport services, parish councils and local government run Local Education Authority (LEA) schools.

Increasingly, police and fire authorities are working closely with local authorities and collaborating in crime and disorder reduction partnerships, property inspections and enhancing property information.

These Awards also recognise the importance of this partnership working. Sharing consistent data enables all parties to better organise their service delivery as the same address structure is used for all the transactions which reduces error, inconsistency and duplication.

What previous winners said

Following are a selection of quotes from some of last year's winners

"To be recognised as one of the best in my field in the country is fantastic, I really feel honoured to have been presented with such an award." - Wokingham Borough Council

"The awards have raised the profile of the LLPG across the authority and I know we will be fully supported as we strive to develop the Gazetteer and its use further. Once again on behalf of the Council, many thanks for all that you have done for us, we are still glowing with pride. I hope to see you at next year's awards. We have already started to think about topics for submission and before too long we will without a doubt be putting 110% into our next LLPG goal." - Blaby District Council

Leader Penny Channer said: "To be recognised in the East of England for the hard work and diligence on this crucial database is a tremendous accolade. Our staff take great pride in their work and I would like to congratulate both Claire Clarke and Craig Smith (council officers) on achieving this award."

Peter Elliott, chairman of the finance and corporate services committee, said: "The work undertaken on this database is of vital importance to a whole variety of organisations and not least the emergency services. It is nice when we are recognised as an example of best practice for the good work we do and all those involved should be very proud." - Maldon District Council

"This has been excellent for us in raising the profile of the LLPG internally and will also help our outdoor leisure team gain recognition for the allotments project they are carrying out and savings this is bringing to the council" - Canterbury City Council

"It's nice to be successful again, as it really helps to cement and promote the role of the LLPG within Chorley" - Chorley Borough Council
